Abington Township is one of the oldest communities in Montgomery County, PA. It earned its place in history in the 1680s when William Penn, founder of Philadelphia, purchased land from the native Lenape and the area later became colonized by European settlers. Present day Abington TWP is one of the most densely populated areas in the County.
Abington Regional Wastewater Authority processes some three million gallons of wastewater per day. In 2014, the Abington Regional Wastewater Authority installed EnviroMix’s BioMix Compressed Gas Mixing technology at their wastewater treatment plant in Chinchilla, PA to help them achieve nutrient removal from their waste stream. The BioMix system provides the critical function of mixing while maintaining the anoxic and anaerobic environments required to remove nitrogen and phosphorous prior to the release of clean water into local rivers and streams such as Leggetts Creek. “Point-source discharges in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed are heavily regulated,” Tyler Kunz, Vice President of Sales, explains. “Excess levels of nitrogen and phosphorous can create serious problems for the local environment and result in algae bloom in waterways leading to destruction of aquatic life.”
The BioMix system has been helping the Abington Wastewater Regional Authority keep the local environment and waterways safe and clean for almost three years and in the process has been saving taxpayers’ dollars. During the selection of mixing technology for the plant upgrade it was estimated that BioMix would yield 20-year Present-Worth Operating and Maintenance (O&M) savings of over $800,000 versus traditional mechanical mixing technology. “We’ve been able to replace 12 individual mixers with a much more efficient mixing system that has no moving parts in the tanks which has decreased Abington’s O&M costs significantly,” confirms Tyler.
